Craft CMS: taking over, updating and extending websites

Your website runs on Craft CMS, but the agency no longer looks after it, or a major update is due? We take over existing Craft projects, keep Craft and plugins up to date and build new websites that another team can carry on.

Where we use Craft CMS

We look after Craft websites for clients, take over projects from agencies and build new websites and portals. Craft is particularly suited to structured content, several languages and connections to other systems.

This website also runs on Craft CMS 5 (As of 2026-10): three languages, content model and configuration in the repository. Craft is built on PHP. What else we do with PHP is described under PHP & Craft CMS.

Typical tasks with Craft CMS

  • Taking over a Craft website from an agency: recording access, repository, server, plugins, licences and backups.
  • Updates of Craft and its plugins, tested first on a staging copy with your content.
  • Update to a new major version, step by step and with a way back.
  • Reviewing plugins: what is maintained, what is abandoned and what can be replaced by a custom module.
  • Extending the content model: new sections, fields, languages and forms.
  • Interfaces to a CRM, an ERP system or a newsletter service.
  • Operation on Linux or in Docker, with backups and a restore test.
  • Securing the control panel, user permissions and server, described under Web application and website security.

How we take over a Craft website from an agency

  1. Secure access

We clarify with you who has access to server, domain, repository and control panel, and set up our own access.

  2. CMS check

We record versions, plugins, licences, updates and backups and assess the risks.

  3. Staging

We build a copy of the website with your content, on which we test updates and changes.

  4. Catch up on updates

We apply missing updates in steps, each one first on staging and then in the agreed maintenance window.

  5. Ongoing support

After that we keep Craft, plugins and server up to date and implement new requirements.

New websites that others can take over

We build new websites and portals with Craft CMS the way we would want to take over a website ourselves. The content model is documented, code and configuration live in your repository, and updates go through staging with tests. Another team can later carry the website on without us.

Design and brand come from your agency or your designer. We implement them and take care of technology, content, interfaces and operations.

The first step: a CMS check

CMS check: WordPress and Craft CMS

For companies with a business-critical WordPress or Craft CMS website and no agency or maintainer any more: before a takeover, before a major update or after a security incident.

  • Versions of CMS, PHP, database and server, and their support status
  • Plugins and themes: what is maintained, what is abandoned and what should be replaced
  • Updates: what is missing and how risky it is to catch up
  • Backups: what is backed up and whether a restore has been tested
  • Security: admin access, two-factor login, user permissions and known vulnerabilities
  • Licences for the CMS and commercial plugins: which ones exist and in whose name they are registered

At this stage we change nothing on the website. We check custom themes and plugins for maintenance status and known vulnerabilities, not line by line. The check covers one website; we price further websites individually.

What the result contains

A written report with the risks in order of priority and a plan for takeover, updates and ongoing support. The report is yours.

Questions about Craft CMS

Can you take over our website if the agency no longer works with us?

Yes. What matters is access to the hosting or server, the domain and the admin area. If there is no repository, we take the code and the database from the server and create a new repository that belongs to you.

In the CMS check we record what is installed, which plugins and licences exist and what is missing. If the agency helps with the handover, things go faster.

How much work is an update to a new major version of Craft CMS?

That depends mainly on the plugins and on your own code. We check whether each plugin is available for the new version, what has to be replaced and which changes your custom modules and templates need.

We test the update on a staging copy with your content. We switch production over in an agreed maintenance window, with a backup and a way back. We state the effort in working days after the CMS check.

What if we are missing access credentials?

This can usually be solved. We start with what you still have to hand. That is the contract and customer account with the hosting provider, access to the domain and, where available, the repository and backups. Server access can often be reset through the hosting provider if you act as the contracting party. We only gain access to a system with your explicit consent.

Do you cover weekend duty from time to time?

Yes. Support and emergencies are covered around the clock (24/7), weekends included. For other enquiries we are available Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00 Central European Time, and we reply within one working day.

Not sure which service fits your system?

Describe your system in two sentences. We will tell you which service fits and whether an entry product at a fixed price is the right first step.
